On Dance as a Common Ground for Critical Practices

Panelists
Felix Dompreh, Pascale ‘Baba’ Altenburger, Nora Amin, DR. ‘H’ Patten

Dance is a field of multiple artistic practices and embodied experiences, but which dances and experiences take priority when it comes down to support, appreciation, and value? To which spaces and situations are those the dances and bodies deemed unworthy relegated to? And which actions are those affected taking to counter the biases? Reflecting on hierarchies within dance practice and the ways that different European dance sectors contribute to and uphold ongoing power asymmetries, this panel discussion unpacks notions of dance and decoloniality, explored through the experiences and work of BIPoC artists. Bringing together international artists like choreographers and authors ’H’ Patten and Nora Amin, dance maker and pedagogue Pascale ‘Baba’ Altenburger, and Felix Dompreh, founder and artistic director of KUYUM Tanzplattform, the panel explores their respective dance practices. These various approaches all share a commitment to empowerment and the transmission of transcultural dance knowledge, foregrounding perspectives shaped by racialized and marginalized dances, knowledge forms, and traditions. The event opens with presentations by the speakers followed by a moderated conversation and Q&A, and closes with a moment of dance picking up on those practices which have been discussed—audience members are warmly invited to join.
