Grounding & energy use in movement

This workshop focuses on grounding, energy use, and body awareness through contemporary and African dance practices. Participants explore how strength is distributed throughout the body, how weight shifts, and how movement can become both efficient and expressive.

The workshop begins with simple mind-body exercises that encourage participants to connect with their physical state from within, shifting attention away from appearance and toward sensation. It creates space for participants to recognise how factors such as sleep, stress, and mental focus influence movement and physical capacity.

Through guided tasks, participants investigate tension and release, effort and ease, and the relationship between stability and mobility. Exercises include isolations, limitations, floor work, traveling sequences, and weight-shifting practices designed to challenge habitual movement patterns and increase adaptability.

Particular attention is given to the lower body and grounding principles inspired by African dance techniques, where the relationship to weight and the floor is central.

Open to everyone. No prior dance experience required.

The workshop is open to participants with and without prior dance experience and welcomes people with different physical abilities, encouraging them to work from their own physical experience and capacity. Its improvisational and process-oriented approach supports an inclusive learning environment.
