CHUMA-CHUMA

Chuma Chuma is a dance practice that combines different dance styles with movements inspired by Tanzanian dance traditions. The class focuses on helping participants explore movements that come from their own personal identity rather than simply copying choreography.

“Chuma” means iron or to pick in Swahili. These meanings reflect the metaphor of the class: breaking movement boundaries, becoming flexible, and transforming movements by exploring and selecting them during the creative process.

In this workshop, we will combine and explore different movement qualities—shaping them, questioning them, playing with them, and blending them together. The goal is to push our bodies toward discovering new movements and personal stories through dance.

The class also includes short reflection moments for checking in and out, as well as sharing stories about dance movements from Dar es Salaam. A short Q&A at the end allows participants to reflect on their experience.

Open to everyone. No prior dance experience required.

The workshop is open to participants with and without prior dance experience and welcomes people with different physical abilities. Workshop facilitators Tadhi Alawi and Samwel Japhet value collective participation and community building, and support an inclusive learning environment.

If you have specific accessibility needs, please contact us by September 10, 2026, at workshops@kuyumarts.de so that we can best facilitate and support your participation.
