Black Chroni-Queens

Cintia Rangel and Doriane Mbenoun explore the rich and dynamic range of female voices, focusing on their everyday encounters as black women in a society dominated by exoticism, sexism and fascism.

Inspired by the story of Nana Yaa Asantewaa, a warrior woman who helped defend the Golden Stool of the Asante Kingdom against the British colonialists in the early 20th century, they take control of their chronicle and write their own history. Queenship Resilient Black Women is celebrated in the context of Afrofuturism and neo-African dance practices to shape a new ecosphere.

Afrofuturism, with its emphasis on envisioning futures where black people, particularly women, are empowered and central to the narrative, offers a powerful lens through which to explore themes of identity, agency, and empowerment.”

The focus on queens of our daily life” suggests a celebration of the strength, resilience, and creativity of women in everyday contexts, highlighting their importance and influence in shaping culture and society. Ricardo de Paula
