AFRO-SOMATIC

With Kossi Sébastien Aholou-Wokawui

The workshop explores the principle of rootedness, which makes it possible to be centred and connected with oneself and the environment. Participants will explore specific movement dynamics such as ripple, momentum, weight shift and foot movement.

This workshop invites you to explore the world of Afro-Somatic techniques. We will deconstruct the Afro-Urban dance style, which is a synthesis of traditional West African dances, Caribbean dance from Haiti and Cuba, and Western contemporary dance. This conveys the feeling of a free body and mind.

Afro-Somatic work focuses on grounding, breathing and mobility, and involves a constant dialogue between the cosmos and nature. Improvisation, musical accompaniment and the key elements of African dance, such as energy, rhythm, grounded movement and elevation, play an essential role.

Participants are asked to bring a loincloth or a large scarf measuring at least one metre.

Language: German, English, French and Ewe
Music: Live (With Moussa Coulibaly and Janos Crecelius)
Dance level: open to all levels

The exact studio in which the workshop will take place will be announced shortly. The Uferstudios are located at Uferstraße 23, 13357 Berlin. We will inform you here as soon as the details are finalized.
