Traditional dances are deeply rooted in the culture of different ethnic groups. To understand the cultural backgrounds, this workshop teaches the movements, rhythms and songs associated with them.
Tématé is a traditional dance from western Côte d’Ivoire. It was created by young women to reflect the process of their work in the fields. The movements are accompanied by drumbeats and depict the repetitive labour of fieldwork: digging, sowing and harvesting. This three-part sequence is characteristic of Tématé, which is also known for its spontaneous and creative individual expression, explosive energy, and tense rhythms.
The basics of the dance are learnt in the workshop. A choreography inspires the participants to develop their own small dance solos and through improvisation they take part in the Tématé dance circle.
