Samwel Japhet is a Tanzanian dance artist, choreographer, and social entrepreneur who found his voice through dance after a rough childhood of homelessness and abuse. He creates choreographic works that blend dance with storytelling and social issues, using movement to explore human relationships while reflecting on social and political realities. A graduate of MUDA Africa Dance School, Samwel is co-founder and producer of the Tanzania-based non-profit Nantea Dance Company and co-managed the UMOJA residency for East African and European artists. He is a Salzburg Global Fellow, a 2024–2026 Global Fellow with The Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics at Georgetown University, and a recipient of the 2021 Seed Award from the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development. His work has toured festivals and theaters in the Netherlands, South Korea, Italy, South Africa, Portugal, Mozambique, Germany, Ethiopia, Israel, and beyond.
